Visitor Guide to Matagorda

Getting Here

Matagorda sits at the mouth of the Colorado River on the upper Texas coast in Matagorda County. Most visitors drive in from Houston (about two hours southwest) or from Bay City (roughly 20 minutes east on FM 521 and connecting farm roads). State Highway 60 runs through the area and links Matagorda with nearby coastal communities.

There is no commercial airport in town. If you fly in, George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby airports in Houston are the most common gateways, followed by a rental car for the coastal drive. GPS coordinates for the town center are near 28.69° N, 95.97° W. Cell service can be spotty on some back roads, so save directions before you leave Bay City or Wharton.

When to Visit

Spring and fall bring mild temperatures and strong birding along the bay and beach. Summer is peak season for fishing, boating, and beach driving, but also brings heat and afternoon storms. Winter draws anglers and duck hunters and offers quieter beaches on weekdays.

Check the events calendar before you book. Community fundraisers, holiday parades, and cook-offs fill weekends throughout the year. Holiday weekends and spring break weeks book lodging early, so reserve where to stay in advance when possible.

What to Pack

  1. Sunscreen, hats, and light long sleeves for long days on the water or sand.
  2. Insect repellent for dawn and dusk near marshes and boat ramps.
  3. Refillable water bottles and a cooler if you plan to fish or picnic.
  4. Rain jacket or poncho during summer and early fall.
  5. Cash or cards accepted by local bait camps, since some rural merchants have limited card readers.
  6. Beach driving permit if you plan to take a vehicle on the sand (see our Matagorda Beach page for current rules and fees).
