Floating Classroom (Karma) ...

The sea is frequently considered the most mysterious realm of planet earth. Unseen to the naked eye lays a magnificent and overwhelming number of unknowns lurking beneath its surface often making it a somewhat unnerving place to visit for individuals who are largely unfamiliar with its many wonders and ways. Texas A&M University developed the Floating Classroom Program (FCP) and chose the coastal village of Matagorda its permanent homeport. For Texas school groups and youth organizations, the Floating Classroom Program offers the unique opportunity to gain hands-on learning experiences which focus on the environment, natural resources and human activities associated with our coastal and oceanic assets. The typical, five-hour education program consists of a 1 ½ to 2 ½ hour Discovery Cruise aboard A&M’s scientifically equipped 57-foot research and teaching vessel – the R/V Karma - and one of three (3) shore side education sessions. This program is offered six days a week (Monday-Saturday), twelve months a year. The TAMU Floating Classroom also offers its two and one-half hour Discover Cruise to the public on the first Saturday of each month. There is a cost recovery fee of $12.50 for those 14 to 57 and $8.50 for those under 14 or over 57. In addition, the Texas Sea Grant College program and Texas Cooperative Extension, as joint sponsors of the FCP, provides teacher training in marine sciences during June.
